Carnatic in Movies 8: Panthuvarali
Here is one raaga that feels light but very deep. I forget myself completely whenever I hear the alapana or neraval of this - especially "Siva Siva Ena Radha". I do not know the relation to other raagas. In fact in one of the stories of Sujatha, one character will ask whatz the difference between Panthuvarali and Kamavarthini. And some say the song Siva Siva Ena Radha is in fact Kamavarthini. I am not sure of that but my little understanding of the raaga (assuming Panthuvarali :-)), here are few of my favorites:
- "Shobane" of Thyagaraja by Dr.M.Balamurali Krishna
- "Siva siva ena radha" of Thyagaraja sung by Dr.K.J.Yesudas
- "Raguvara Nannu" of Thyagaraja sung by Dr.K.J.Yesudas
- "Paadhi Madhi Nadhi" of Arunagiri Nadhar sung by Dr.K.J.Yesudas
- "Ninne Nera Nammi Naanura" of Thyagaraja sung by Dr.K.J.Yesudas
- "Kaani Nilam Vendum" of Mahakavi Subramania Bharathy sung by Sudha Ragunathan, Sowmya et al.
There are several songs in movies that I could find:
- "Ezhu Swarangalukkul" by Vani Jayaram from the movie Apoorva Ragangal
- "Azhaikkiraan Madhavan (First stanza) by Dr.K.J.Yesudas from the movie Ragavendrar
- "Devi Devi Thenil Kulithene by S.P.Balasubramaniam from an old movie
- "Kangal Theduthe Kavi Paduthe" from the movie Manathodu Mazhaikkaalam
- "Hey Rama Hey Kya Hua" from the movie Rangeela
There is something special about this raaga. I still remember the days when I was crazy of this raaga that even I decided to name kids or house to sound this word :-)
Hear it yourself and tell me.

The song "Ezhu Swarangalukkul" by Vani Jayaram from the movie Apoorva Ragangal is based on the raga "poorvikalayani" and not panthuvarali...again, these two ragas subtly differ in their swaras :)
Just one more thing, panthuvarali is a particular favourite of A R Rahman's...another song of his (based on panthuvarali) that I thought of offhand---Ruth aa gayi re from 1947 Earth. Adding more trivia, Panthuvarali is also known as Puryadhanashri (Hindustani)
:D
Hi rammesh,
A long long journey in time made me oblivious of your continued presence in the web world.
Your multi dimensional presence is too obvious to be described.

1ly d starting part is inPanthuvarali.
1 of my fav song in this raga is
Rojavai thalattum thendral from Ninaivellam nithya.
You have a wonderful collection here, Wish you will continue blogging!
Listen to 'Aparama Bhakti' of Thyagaraja by Dr.Balamuralikrishna. The depth of alapana and the bhavam of the kriti will take you to another world. The raga Panthuvarali ( aka Kamavardhani ) is a beautiful raga which is the transpose of Mayamalavagowla ( replace the sudha madhyamam by Prathimadhyamam) which is also explored to various depths in Hindustani music as well. If you listen to Bhimsen Joshi's and Rashid Khan's 'Puriya Dhanashree' which they elaborated for an hour or so, you can feel the intense emotional beauty of this raga. Good luck.
it's my very favorite raga..
Piraye Piraye - Pithamagan
Putham Pudhu Poo - Dhalapathi
Om Sivoham - Naan Kadavul
Oraayiran Yaanai - Nandha
Amma Endraale - Nandha
Ninnai Charanadaindhen - Bharathi movie
Rojavai thaalatum thendral - Ninaivellam Nithya
Enna Varam Vendum - Nandhavana Theru
Kaathirunna Pennalle - Classmate (Malayalam)
Hai Rama is in Hindustani raga which is Purya Dhanashri
Macha Machiniye - Star (Purya Dhanashri)
It's a superb raga which will take us to a different world.. and a pleasant experience... I'm a fan of ARR.. but still.. i feel IR is the king of Panthuvarali in films.... Good work.... :)
I am dieing to figure out the raaga of Ore Piya from the movie Aaja Nachle... can you tlel em what ti is? its such a beautiful raaga
You have left Violin Concerto in Raja Parvai.
This symphonious expression of Raga Pantuvarali song begins in carnatic and changes to Hindustani type and again metaphors into a Western classical - Jazz - Rock - Pop without any deflexion from the grammar of the Panthuvarali raga. ( whole song is in Panthuvarali)

P.Susila & S.P.Balasubramaniam sung "Engeyo Yetho paattonRu kEttEn" in Former Tamilnadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalitha's last appearance movie "Nadhiyai Thedi vandha kadal" also set to Panthuvarali. This we can feel in the charanams very well.
A beautiful song of YESUDAS & S. P. Balasubrahmanyam after 27 years...
YESUDAS and S P Balasubrahmanyam
